KS 1/2 How do we know what dinosaurs were like?

Let us introduce you and your class to Viv the Velociraptor. He's a life-sized model of the species Velociraptorinae Deinonychus made famous in Jurassic Park and he can be wheeled INTO YOUR SCHOOL HALL or CLASSROOM!!! His name means 'terrible claw', and these claws, along with his rows of sharp teeth and large piercing eyes, made him a truly scary carnivore 100 million years ago!

After introducing Viv we ask a question. "How do we know what dinosaurs were like?" Using a mixture of genuine fossils, replicas and models we go through the story of how little bits of fossil evidence have been pieced together to give us the picture we have today of dinosaurs, how they lived and their environment. We show skulls, vertebrae, teeth and complete skeletons, living plants, fossil leaves, fossilised wood and even dinosaur skin impressions!

The session includes hands-on activities designed to suit different age groups including sorting and handling genuine fossils, constructing a time-line, vocabulary and spelling games, floor jigsaws and sketching.

The sessions can be used as a stand-alone treat to stimulate an interest in science, or as part of a larger project. Dinosaur projects can be used to cover science, geography, history, literacy, numeracy, DT, music and art - a truly cross-currricula subject!
